The Toughest Choice So Far

I've known that choosing a photographer was gonna be the hardest part of wedding planning. Most of the wedding photos I'm familiar with look like this:

While I completely understand the importance of having portraits done with family, they're not all that exciting. Actually I originally thought having a wedding photographer wasn't an important part of the day because these kind of pictures are so boring and lifeless. I want more life in my photos.

Then I learned a few years ago that my friend Jensey married an amazing photographer, became an amazing photographer herself, and they started their own wedding photography business. Root Photography. Their pictures screamed life and love, and I immediately knew that I needed something like that at my own wedding.

Unfortunately the Roots live in Florida, and while it's tempting to fly them up here to shoot the wedding, I have to also keep our budget in mind.

So started the search for a Chicago area photog. It was a pain to say the least. Either I loved the photos but the photographer was out of our price range, or they fit our budget but I wasn't digging their style. I was getting so frustrated with the whole process so I turned to the 'bee. On a Chicago board about photographers I found J Wiley Photography. After looking through Jennifer's online portfolio and liking her wedding packages I shot out an email with my fingers crossed that our date was still available. The next morning I got a reply that our date was still open and that she'd like to meet with us!

I could ramble on and on about back and forth emails, but to make a long story short, Jimmy and I are meeting her in the city tomorrow night. I hope we make a connection and feel comfortable around each other. What would be worse than spending the day being photographed by someone you don't get along with?

Still pining over the Roots, I asked Jensey if she had any tips for us. She sent a great list of questions we should ask, as well as an example of how one of their meetings normally go with prospective clients. She's seriously the best.

Photography was my most important decision, too. I searched through so many before I found the perfect one. Good luck!
