We talked about it a little over the weekend and decided that we both have a few criteria for our trip.
- somewhere we can relax, but not feel like we're confined to our resort
- all-inclusive would be a plus, but not a must
- at least a week-long trip
- affordable
- somewhere we've both never been
- accommodations we would not normally splurge on: suite, villa, etc.
We just did an all-inclusive trip in July to the Dominican Republic and enjoyed that all our meals were paid for. Our resort was in the middle of nowhere, so we couldn't leave unless we paid for an excursion outside of the hotel. By the end of the week I was ready to go home because I was getting bored of spending all day every day at the pool and beach. I definitely want something different for our honeymoon.
While watching our shows last night (How I Met Your Mother and The Big Bang Theory) we googled some possible locations. Some were merely pipe dreams because of the cost, but it's given Jimmy some ideas where to start.

These are some of the places we've come up with.
Mexico.
Out of all the places we looked at, Mexico would be the most affordable. Neither of us have been there before, but I feel like it's a ho-hum option and I don't know where that's coming from. Anyway... there are a lot of all-inclusive options available, and there would be opportunities for us to get out and see the sites outside of our hotel.
Caribbean.
The Caribbean would be another possibility, but we'd have to find an island we hadn't been to. Jimmy would have to research a lot more than we did for the Dominican Republic to find a resort that was central to a main city so we wouldn't be trapped on the grounds of the hotel. Lots of all-inclusives out there so we'd have a lot to choose from which is much more budget friendly than more exclusive destinations.
The Mediterranean.
I would LOVE to see Greece. If we went with the Mediterranean for our honeymoon we'd probably do a cruise so we could see multiple places and not have to worry about hotels, meals, or transportation. The only thing is that Jimmy and I have never been on a cruise before and we don't know if we'd like it. We'll know by next July because we're going on a Disney Cruise with my entire family. Flights would be expensive, but the all-inclusiveness of a cruise appeals to us.
Fiji.
I've never been west of Hawaii so Fiji sound so amazing and foreign for me. From what I've seen online it's a very romantic location. It's also a very EXPENSIVE location. I think it'd be a memorable and unique honeymoon, but as soon as Jimmy saw that it required a 12 hour plane ride, he laughed at the idea. Still in the running if we can pull together those kinds of funds.
I love to plan vacations so it'll be hard for me to hand over the reigns to Jimmy. Whatever he chooses I'm sure it will be amazing.

YAY ALL INCLUSIVE! I would much rather pay upfront and NOT WORRY. My thoughts- a bigger island / area would probably be best for you so you're not bored. We didn't want Mexico because of the whole epidemic thing but that's pretty much moot now, months later. I have heard GREAT THINGS about the mayan ruin thingies there. Ours is Jamaica- 15 mintues from the other resort (free transport) and minutes from Dunns River Falls for touristy stuff. As far as Fiji, it's beautiful but VERY impoverished- I'd say moreso than you would guess. My friend did Peace Corps there and for a few years... it was interesting to say the least. -Miss Pug
Oh yea and one thing about Greece- N to S is like NJ to FL, temperature wise. It's smart to check out where you're going and when. I had a friend go there in January and some parts were tropical, others cold. Another friend honeymooned there and it was nice, but definitely not peak season (end of Sept into Oct). A bridesmaid of mine's family owns a place there (they're from Greece) so she goes every summer and LOVES it. -Miss Pug
Such helpful info! I never would have guessed that about Fiji just by looking at the beautiful pictures I found online. I'll pass it all along to Jimmy when he seriously starts planning! Thanks Miss Pug!
My fiance is planning our honeymoon too (with a little nudging from his mother and me! lol). We have condo hookups worldwide, so it looks like we're going to New Zealand! SOOO excited! We just have to wait another month or so to be in their "window" for booking the condo and the tickets. WOO HOO! =)
Mexico is pretty easy to get to and their all inclusives are really good. There's a lot of good places like that in Cancun.
