So we moved on. We'd do cake. I did not, however, want to pay a ridiculous amount of cash for a multi-level cake that most likely wouldn't taste as good as it looked. So I thought about what a fancy cake really meant... it sits in the reception hall until the bride and groom cut it, then it's wheeled somewhere out of site to be cut and served. Why couldn't we just have a small cake to cut and then serve sheet cakes waiting in the kitchen?
I've had sooooo many delicious sheet cakes at birthday parties and other celebrations that came from grocery stores like Costco and Jewel. They're way WAY cheeper than a traditional wedding cake and taste that much better, too. A tiered cake isn't important to Jimmy and I so this is the route we're going. Not many people will notice or care and I'm hoping people will actually eat and enjoy the cake. I'm been to weddings where the pieces of cake are left untouched because it's pretty much inedible even though it was pretty before being served.
I'm also planning on making a cake stand like this one from Once Wed.

I love this idea.... I'm with you on the cake thing. Its just going to be eaten so really whats the big deal?! And I agree, i've had some yummy sheet cakes too. I love this cake stand, it goes perfect with your theme! (not to mention you can use it for other things after the wedding)
Did you want a cake that was like the one in the picture? or do you have something else in mind?
Good idea. We are actually having a "fake cake". It will be a tiered cake made out of styrofoam and covered in frosting to look like a real cake. The back is going to be real so that way we can still "cut the cake." Then we will just serve sheet cakes to the guests.
Yeah, the cake is definitely more hyped up than it needs to be. It's a showpiece for the decor for sure (if you want it to be), but to me, it was more important for the taste aspect. I think you have some good ideas for sure.
